Four Facts About Auto Glass

  • Post category:Auto Glass

Did you know that the glass in your vehicle consists of different types, each with its own function and purpose? This is why it is never a good idea to DIY glass repair; it’s best left to the professionals! Here are a few basic facts about auto glass that every vehicle owner should know about.

  1. The windshield is made with LAMINATED SAFETY GLASS

Laminated safety glass is made up of two sheets of glass, with a thin layer of vinyl sandwiched between them. When a small object strikes a piece of laminated safety glass, often, only the outer layer of glass is affected. In a more severe impact, the glass may shatter but it does not fly apart – the broken pieces of glass adhere to the vinyl inner lining, preventing shards of glass from flying into the passenger area.

  1. Rear and side windows are made of TEMEPERED GLASS

Constructed through a special process where the glass is heated, then rapidly cooled, tempered glass is extra strong. Tempered glass does not shatter on impact. Instead, it disintegrates into tiny little pieces. There are no large, jagged pieces of auto glass to cause injury.

  1. Auto glass contributes to the structural integrity of the vehicle

Apart from protecting occupants from the elements, auto glass plays a role in the structural integrity of the vehicle. The windshield helps support the roof of the vehicle. If an accident results in a roll over, the windshield is designed to prevent the roof from crushing in. It is important to replace a cracked windshield with a properly installed replacement, so that it has integrity to function accordingly.

  1. ADAS

If you drive a vehicle made within the last decade, it is likely to be equipped with ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems). There are sensors throughout your vehicle that operate technologies such as automatic braking, blind spot detection, collision avoidance, adaptive light control and a multitude of other systems. Some of these sensors are embedded in your vehicle’s glass – another clear reason to have windshields and windows replaced by certified technicians only.
