Vehicle Spring Clean Routine: Inspecting Your Windshield and Windows

  • Post category:Auto Glass

Spring is the perfect time to give your vehicle a thorough cleaning and inspection. After months of winter driving through rain, road salt, grit, and debris, your vehicle’s glass surfaces may have taken more damage than you realize. While washing the exterior and vacuuming the interior are important, paying special attention to your windshield, windows, and mirrors can significantly improve both safety and visibility on the road.

Start with a deep clean of all glass surfaces. Winter grime, salt residue, and dust can create a film that reduces clarity, especially when sunlight or headlights hit the glass. Use a quality automotive glass cleaner and a microfiber cloth to clean both the inside and outside of the windshield and windows. Don’t forget the rear window and side mirrors, which are critical for safe lane changes and reversing.

Once the glass is clean, take a few minutes to carefully inspect it in good lighting. Small chips and cracks on the windshield are common after winter because rocks and debris are often kicked up by other vehicles on wet or gravel-covered roads. Even a tiny chip can weaken the structural integrity of the glass and may quickly spread into a larger crack with temperature changes, vibrations, or bumps in the road.

Your windshield does more than just block wind and rain. It plays a key role in vehicle safety. In many vehicles, the windshield helps support the roof in the event of a rollover and allows airbags to deploy correctly. A compromised windshield may not perform as intended during a collision. Additionally, chips and cracks can distort your view of the road, especially when sunlight hits them at certain angles.

If you find a small chip, it’s best to address it quickly. Many minor chips can be repaired easily before they expand into cracks that require a full windshield replacement. Prompt repairs also help maintain clear visibility and prevent glare from refracting through damaged glass.

Side windows and mirrors should also be checked for cracks, scratches, or loose fittings. Damaged side mirrors can make it harder to judge distances and blind spots, increasing the risk of accidents. Ensure mirrors are clean, properly aligned, and securely mounted.

Finally, check your windshield wipers while you’re working on the glass. Worn blades can leave streaks that reduce visibility in spring rain. Replacing them is an inexpensive way to maintain a clear view of the road.

A little attention to your vehicle’s glass during spring cleaning can go a long way. Clear, undamaged windows and mirrors help ensure you see the road, and everything around you, as safely as possible.
