What is Insulated Glass?

Insulated glass, also called a sealed unit, double pane, or thermal pane glass, is a window design consisting of two glass panes with a spacer bar in between. The two panes are sealed together to form a single unit, which offers significantly better insulation than a single pane of glass. In many cases, the space between these panes is filled with Argon gas, enhancing the insulation properties by slowing down the transfer of heat. Some units may also use Low E (low emissivity) glass coatings to further improve insulation by reflecting heat rather than absorbing it.

One of the primary benefits of insulated glass is its effectiveness in keeping indoor temperatures stable, reducing heating and cooling costs. By limiting the amount of outside air that can penetrate, insulated glass units help maintain consistent temperatures indoors, making homes more energy-efficient and comfortable.

However, insulated glass units can sometimes experience seal failure, a condition in which the seal between the two glass panes weakens or breaks, allowing moisture to enter. When this happens, condensation or fogging can occur between the panes, making the glass look foggy or dirty. This doesn’t mean the entire window frame needs replacing; instead, replacing the insulated glass unit alone can restore clarity and insulation.

If you’re considering replacing an insulated glass unit, always ask about certification and warranty. Certified units, such as those with IGMA (Insulating Glass Manufacturers Alliance) certification, ensure that the product meets high manufacturing standards for durability and performance. At First Response Glass Ltd, all our sealed units are IGMA-certified and come with a 10-year manufacturer’s warranty against seal failure, providing peace of mind that your investment is protected.

Keep in mind that the standard warranty for insulated glass is around five years, so it’s worth seeking a unit with a longer warranty period, like the 10 years we offer. The warranty can be a great indicator of quality and longevity, so don’t settle for less than a reliable, long-term solution for your home’s insulation needs.
